ALL FOR HAMDEN HALL
Jim and Kathy Herlihy
Parents, Class of 2019
"When we toured Hamden Hall six years ago, we thought we were doing a coach a favor. We’d just take a look around and be on our way. Little did we know! At that time and ever since, the challenging curriculum, breadth of opportunities, and the chance for our daughter to pursue all of her many interests at once has made Hamden Hall one of the best investments we have ever made. We chose to contribute to the Senior Parent Legacy Fund in appreciation for the special teachers who took a real interest in Kiley, for the lifelong friends that she has made, and for the opportunities to learn, grow, and lead that she experienced and thoroughly enjoyed at Hamden Hall."

Latin teacher Stephanie Spaulding stands next to one wave of the 'River of Words' art installation project, which was undertaken by World Language students across all three divisions.
'River of Words' Installs Flow of Meaningful Expression
A river is flowing through the hallways of Whitson with waves made of words versus water.
In celebration of World Language Week at the end of February, the World Language Department coordinated an art installation called "River of Words." Language students in Grades 5 through 12 participated by creating an illustrated word poster.
Each student chose a word in the language they study that has personal meaning for them. As such, words were created in French, Latin, Mandarin, and Spanish. Some students created an extra poster featuring a word in a language that is part of their family’s cultural heritage.
Grouped together, all of the word art posters create a river of words that flows through the stairwell of Whitson Hall, according to Latin teacher Stephanie Spaulding.
“Looking at ‘River of Words,’ it is clear that we have so much that connects us as a human community. There are repeating themes like love, friendship, music, sports, and food. In these works of art, you can see what we value as a community. It gives us the opportunity to show our students what connects them to each other and to people living all around the world. It really is beautiful,” said Ms. Spaulding.
The art installation is just one element of World Language Week, which is celebrated in all three divisions at Hamden Hall.
"We've been celebrating World Language Week for three decades, and each year our faculty and students add a new component that keeps this tradition vibrant and relative. This year's installation of the 'River of Words' is yet another example of what makes Hamden Hall so special. We continue to create a wonderful culture of learning via myriad mediums across all of our levels," said Head of School Bob Izzo.
The Boys' Varsity Basketball Team captured the NEPSAC Class B Championship and netted a 25-2 season record.
We Are the Champions!
by Bud Kohler
It was March Madness at its best as the Boys' Varsity Basketball team defeated Canterbury School 75-66 to win the New England Class B Tournament at Clark University on Sunday evening.
“I'm so proud of this group for being so resilient all year. Finishing your career and season with a regional championship win doesn’t happen to that many teams in the country,” Head Coach Sean Doherty told his players after the game.
To earn their spot in the final, the Hornets had clawed back from a 14-point deficit to edge Brooks School 65-62 in a semifinal game the night before. So the question was whether the #2 seeded Hornets had enough gas left in the tank to best the top-seeded Saints.
Canterbury had already inflicted one of the only two regular season losses on the Hornets, plus they had eliminated The Hall in last year’s tournament; so there was certainly some trepidation but also a burning fire for a payback.
Both teams came out hot in the first half and traded baskets at first. Clutch shooting began to make a difference; however, and the Hornets stretched their lead to seven 43-36 at the break.
The up tempo and high scoring of the first half suited the Hornets, but the second frame became a much cagier affair. A stretch of cold shooting by the Hornets enabled the Saints to climb back to tie and eventually take a slim lead with a little over eight minutes to play. Down the stretch each possession and trip down the court increased the drama.
Every time Canterbury grabbed another lead the Hornets responded. In particular, junior Jackson Benigni seemed to take the game on his shoulders and let fly with one key three pointer after another to eventually wrestle a four-point lead back with only a few minutes to play. Canterbury was forced to start fouling but to no avail as Benigni, Tim Dawson, and Tre Breland all delivered clutch free throw points to seal the win.

Lower School Science Fair Erupts in Ingenuity
Budding scientists – 74 in all! – displayed their ingenuity and creativity during the recent Lower School Science Fair for students in Grades 4 through 6.
Items regularly found in grocery store aisles were popular among the student projects – after all, who hasn’t wondered which potato chip brand yields the highest grease count.
Popcorn, sugar, milk containers and more were also up for inquiry and study. One project determined the “outcome of a banana” in light versus darkness while yet another studied the effects of gum chewing.
According to Lower School science teacher Steve Jewett, students have been working on their projects in school and at home over the past five weeks.
“Everything from surface tension, to expanding gases, to static electricity, to Bernoulli's principle were researched, investigated, and demonstrated by some very confident young scientists. I am so proud of the effort and passion demonstrated by these developing students and look forward to this project every year,” maintained Mr. Jewett.
For more than three decades, the Lower School Science Department has coordinated the science fair in order that students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of various science topics and principles. Family members, faculty, and fellow students milled about Lender Refectory viewing projects and listening to presenters discuss their research and findings.
